Managed Payments Overview
eBay is managing payments for more sellers
Managing payments is a big step towards making eBay a simpler, more modern managed marketplace, and over 1 million sellers have already registered globally and 38% of eBay’s on-platform volume globally is already processed using managed payments with more joining every day. It’s the way business will be done on eBay, and eBay will require all sellers to register for eBay to manage their payments in 2021.
When you receive a notification from us, we recommend you register before the deadline to avoid any interruption to your business. This process consists of a few simple steps. Once you have registered we will send you further details about how to prepare your business and take full advantage of our simpler approach to payments.
Information shared during registration allows us to get you properly set up for managed payments, and to comply with applicable laws, which helps keep eBay a trusted marketplace.
What to expect when eBay manages payments
- More ways for buyers to pay: Credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayBright, PayPal, gift cards
- One place to sell and get paid, all on eBay: A single source for fees, customized reports, refunds, simplified protections, and dedicated support.
- Streamlined operations: Regardless of how the buyer pays, payouts are initiated within 2 business days (Monday through Friday, excluding bank holidays) of order confirmation. See our video on payouts, here.
A note about eBay listings
Once eBay manages payments, your listings are updated automatically to reflect all the ways buyers can pay. Please refrain from specifying preferred payment methods in your listings.
Changes to the eBay invoicing process
Beginning in late March, sellers on managed payments will have all eBay selling fees and expenses, including those that are currently invoiced, will be collected from your earnings. If your earnings are not sufficient to cover these amounts, we will charge your payment method on file (debit or credit card, and/or linked bank account).
- Examples of eBay selling fees include but are not limited to: insertion fees, promoted listings, optional listing upgrades, and eBay Store subscription fees.
- You may find information on fees and expenses via the reports functionality in the Payments tab in Seller Hub.
- Eventually, you will no longer receive a monthly billing invoice, but depending on your monthly invoice date, you may continue to receive invoices for both March and April. You must still pay any outstanding amounts that are reflected on billing invoices that you receive during this time. Charges will not be duplicated.
International expansion of sites sellers can list on when eBay manages payments
We’re expanding international sites that sellers can list on when eBay manages payments.
- If you offer to ship internationally, your listings will appear in buyer searches on supported international eBay sites. You may also create listings directly on select eBay sites outside of Canada, such as the United States (ebay.com), the United Kingdom (ebay.co.uk), and Germany (ebay.de). Your earnings from these sales will be disbursed to you in CAD. We’ll expand international selling to more countries in the coming months.
- For more details on international selling on eBay, click here. Additional fees may apply if either the buyer's registered address or the delivery address for the item is located outside of Canada.
- Note: When eBay manages your payments, you don’t pay any payments processing fees to PayPal, including for international transactions.
An update on US dollar payout capabilities
In late spring, we will expand our payout functionality to allow sellers registered on eBay.ca to choose to receive payouts in US dollars. At that time, sellers will receive more details on how to register or update their current information if they have already registered. Please note that a US dollar denominated chequing account from a Canadian bank will be required to use this functionality.
Managed Payments FAQs
Will I need to update my listings after signing up to have eBay manage my payments?
No. Once you register, nothing will change until eBay begins managing your payments. Once eBay begins managing your payments, all of your existing listings* will be automatically updated and will reflect the different ways buyers can pay.
*Any listings that violate our listing policies or are in restricted categories not supported when eBay manages payments will end upon activation.
Will there be any restrictions on product categories when eBay manages my payments?
eBay sellers that frequently list in restricted categories will not have their payments managed by eBay until these categories are compatible with eBay managing payments, but we may still require you to register in advance. We will continue to support sellers through the expansion of eBay managing payments and are working to expand the types of items allowed by sellers when eBay manages payments through 2021.
Why are payouts still going to PayPal after eBay begins to manage my payments?
If a listing has a purchase commitment (i.e. listing has an accepted offer, active bid, or the buyer has committed to buy the item) before eBay manages payments on your account, the transaction will be managed by PayPal and you will receive payment for that item in your PayPal account.
This is to ensure buyers have a consistent payments experience from start to finish. Moving forward, for listings created or items sold after eBay manages payments for your account, you will be paid out directly to your bank account, not your PayPal account.
I use third-party tools to manage my business. Will those integrations work when eBay manages my payments?
If you use third-party tools that integrate with eBay APIs to manage your listing, inventory, and order management activities, to reconcile finances, or issuing refunds, there should be no change in how you use those tools when eBay manages your payments. Please contact your individual third-party provider regarding questions specific to their service offerings.
